Advising: mark your calendars 1

Although you're just now getting through your first big assignments and midterms, it will be no time at all before you'll need to think about your plan for next semester. Don't worry: you still have a few weeks before you need to give it too much thought, but you'll want to have a sense of what will be happening and when.

The First-Year Class Dean will be holding three general "program planning meetings" for all first-year students. At the meetings, you'll learn important information about the timeline for the remainder of the semester, including the process and procedures for advance program planning for the spring semester (e.g., upcoming deadlines, lottery sign-ups, course enrollment, departmental program meetings). You'll also learn more about procedures and policies that may be relevant to this semester (e.g., the pass/d/fail policy, the course withdrawal procedure, policies and procedures regarding final exams).

These program planning meetings will be on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, October 19, 20, and 21, 5:30-6:30 p.m., locations TBA. All first-years are required to attend one of these sessions.

DEADLINE: for dropping a course

important information

The deadline to drop a course from your Fall 2015 program is next Tuesday, October 13 at 4:30 p.m.

You can not do this online.  To drop a course from your current program, you must pick up a drop form from the Registrar's office (107 Milbank), complete it, have your adviser sign it, then submit it back to the Registrar's office. The course will then be removed completely from your Fall 2015 program.

If you are considering the idea of dropping a course, talk to your adviser and/or your class dean before making the decision, to ensure that you've considered all of your options. Also, remember that you must be working toward the completion of at least 12 points of credit this semester; if dropping a course would leave you with less than 12 credits and yet seems like your only option, you must see the First-Year Class Dean for special permission, which is given only in extraordinary circumstances.

Note: The deadlines for declaring the "pass/d/fail option" for a course or for withdrawing from a course (which is different from dropping because the course stays on your transcript) are much later in the semester, and the FY Class Dean will go over those policies and procedures at the program planning meetings in mid-October.

DEADLINE: finalizing your Fall 2015 program

important information

The deadline to finalize your Fall 2015 academic program is this Friday, September 18.

That means...
  • The "List of Courses" under your Fall 2015 tab in myBarnard should reflect all courses that you are taking for credit this semester, including any P.E., Dance technique, Varsity sport, or performance course for which you will earn credit this semester. If you are unable to add a course that you know that you are in, or if you are unable to drop a course from your program that you will not be taking, please visit or contact the Registrar's office (107 Milbank, registrar@barnard.edu).
    • Remember that a credit for a P.E. course, Dance technique course, or Varsity sport will appear after the program filing deadline (if the course is eligible for a point of credit for the P.E. requirement). During the third week of courses, the credit for the class will change from 0 to 1, and your total credits will adjust accordingly as well.
    • If you are enrolling in courses that require enrollment in discussion sections or labs that have separate course numbers and call numbers, those additional parts of your program should also appear in your "List of Courses," even though they may not carry additional credits.
      • Friday, September 18, is the last day on which you may officially add a course to your schedule. If you need to add a course to your schedule after that date, you will need to petition the Committee on Programs and Academic Standing for permission to do so (you can obtain a petition and learn procedures at the Registrar's office), and a late add fee may be charged.
      • Friday, September 18, is also the deadline for your adviser to submit approval online for your fall program. So be sure that you have taken steps ahead of time to schedule a meeting with your adviser before the deadline, and do not wait until the end of the day on Friday to ask for a meeting or for approval.
      • Please remember that, if your program is not finalized and approved by your adviser by the end of the day on Friday, you will be charged a late fee, which will become progressively higher for each day past the deadline.
Until the program filing deadline, your Courseworks page may not look exactly like your myBarnard page because it takes some time for an added class on myBarnard to appear on Courseworks and it takes some extra time for a dropped class to disappear from Courseworks. But your Courseworks page will catch up with your myBarnard enrollments. The most important thing this week is to make sure that your enrollments are accurate on your myBarnard Fall 2015 page.

                    important information

The deadline for registering with the College is today, Wednesday, September 9

Remember that "registration" (confirming to the College that you are present and ready to begin the semester) is a distinct procedure from "program filing" (confirming your enrollment in specific courses for the semester).

If you have a hold from a particular department that is preventing you from completing the registration process, visit that department and, once the matter of the hold has been resolved, ask what steps you must take (if any) to have the hold lifted from your account so that you may complete your registration.

If you miss the registration deadline of September 9, you will incur late fees, which will increase with each day you are late.  If you are sadly reading this after the deadline, please go to the Registrar's office (107 Milbank) -- after the deadline, the only way to register is in person at the Registrar.

If you have questions about registration, please visit the Registrar's office (107 Milbank) or your Class Dean.
