Remember that the lotteries for Spring 2016 courses in the First-Year English program, the First-Year Seminar program, and the Psychology Department are now open.

Reminder:  if you are entering the lottery for both Psychology and FY English or Seminar, check for time conflicts before submitting your lottery selections -- make sure that none of your Psych selections conflict with any of your English/Seminar selections, or wait to enter the Psychology lottery until you have your English/Seminar lottery results.  Remember that you will not be able to change your English/Seminar class once you are placed in one.

For more information about each lottery, see the relevant post on the FY Blog:

        FY Seminar

The First-Year Seminar lottery will be open from Wednesday, November 4 at 9:00 a.m. through Sunday, November 8 at 11:00 p.m.

The list of First-Year Seminars that will be offered in Spring 2016 is now available.

You can view a list of the Spring 2016 first-year seminar course titles, days, times, and descriptions (click on the section number for a description of a particular course) in the Columbia Directory of Classes.  To read through titles and descriptions more easily (but without day/time info), you can look at the online Barndard Course Catalogue under First-Year Seminar.
Update: some descriptions were missing from online sources earlier this week (thanks to those who pointed this out!) -- they are now all available in the Barnard Course Catalogue or via this link.

If you need to take First-Year Seminar in spring 2016, you must enter the lottery by logging into your myBarnard account, going to the "Academics" tab and clicking on "First-Year Seminar lottery" link. (The First-Year English lottery is in the same area of myBarnard, so please be sure that you are entering the correct lottery.)

Using the 5-digit call number for each relevant seminar, you will be asked to submit your top five course choices, in order of preference. Please note that the lottery is not time-sensitive -- i.e., there is no priority given for earlier submissions over later submissions -- and that you have an equal chance of being placed into any of the five courses that you list as preferences.

When making your selections, keep in mind:

        • Pick 5 courses you are definitely willing to take -- you may be placed in any one of your choices, and this placement cannot be changed.
        • Check your selections against any known time commitments (sports practices, work schedule, other required courses at Barnard, Columbia, JTS, or elsewhere).
        • If you are also entering the Psychology lottery, make sure that none of your Psychology selections conflict with any of your First-Year Foundation selections, or wait to get your Psychology lottery results before entering the FY Seminar lottery.
Your First-Year Seminar placement will be posted by Tuesday, November 10, at 12:00 p.m. Look in the same area of myBarnard to find your assigned First-Year Seminar, then don't forget to use the 5-digit call number to add the course to your Spring 2016 program. Be sure that the seminar appears on your advance program before your adviser submits her/his approval online.
