Note:  Names of instructors for the various sections will not be available until later -- please select based on topic/time.

You may enter the lottery by logging into your myBarnard account, going to the "Academics" tab and clicking on the "First-Year English lottery" link. (The First-Year Seminar lottery is in the same area of myBarnard, so be sure that you are entering the correct lottery.)

Using the 5-digit call number for the relevant sections, you will be asked to submit your top five course choices, in order of preference. Please note that the lottery is not time-sensitive -- i.e., there is no priority given for earlier submissions over later submissions -- and that you have an equal chance of being placed into any of the four sections that you list among your preferences. 

When making your selections, keep in mind:

• Pick 5 courses you are definitely willing to take -- you may be placed in any one of your choices, and this placement cannot be changed.
• Check your selections against any known time commitments (sports practices, work schedule, other required courses at Barnard, Columbia, JTS, or elsewhere).
• If you are also entering the Psychology lottery, make sure that none of your Psychology selections conflict with any of your First-Year Foundation selections, or wait until you get your Psychology lottery results before entering the FY English lottery.

Your First-Year English placement will be posted by Tuesday, November 10 at 12:00 p.m. You can look in the same area of myBarnard to find your assigned English section.  Don't forget to then use the 5-digit call number to add the course to your Spring 2016 program. Be sure that the English class appears on your advance program before your adviser submits her/his approval online.

A program of the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program will offer intensive language institutes overseas in thirteen critical need foreign languages for summer 2016.  Languages are Arabic and Persian: advanced beginning, intermediate or advanced levels; Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, and Urdu: beginning, intermediate, or advanced levels; and Chinese, Japanese, and Russian: intermediate or advanced levels.  For more information, please consult the website: http://clscholarship.org/

Purpose: To enable students “to design their own grassroots projects for peace that they themselves will implement anywhere in the world during the summer of [2016].”

Award: $10,000 per project.

Deadline: Nominated proposals must be submitted to the Davis Foundation by February, 2016 (exact date TBA).

Contact: Interested students should consult the website www.kwd100projectsforpeace.organd speak with Dean Runsdorf early in the fall semester.

Purpose: To provide “allocations of academic year and summer fellowships to institutions of higher education or consortia of institutions of higher education to assist meritorious undergraduate and graduate students undergoing training in modern foreign languages and related area or international studies.”

Award: Summer FLAS fellowship tuition grant is up to $5000 and $2500 stipend for undergraduate and graduate students.

Deadline: TBA, probably early March 2016.
