The deadline for registering with the College is today, Wednesday, September 9 

Remember that "registration" (confirming to the College that you are present and ready to begin the semester) is a distinct procedure from "program filing" (confirming your enrollment in specific courses for the semester).

If you have a hold from a particular department that is preventing you from completing the registration process, visit that department and, once the matter of the hold has been resolved, ask what steps you must take (if any) to have the hold lifted from your account so that you may complete your registration.

If you miss the registration deadline of September 9, you will incur late fees, which will increase with each day you are late.  If you are sadly reading this after the deadline, please go to the Registrar's office (107 Milbank) -- after the deadline, the only way to register is in person at the Registrar.

If you have questions about registration, please visit the Registrar's office (107 Milbank) or your Class Dean.

The author of the winning article will receive $500 and publication alongside noted scholars in the Journal’s forthcoming issue on the Geopolitics of Energy. Published by Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, the Journal of International Affairs is one of the oldest and most respected foreign affairs periodicals.

Fall 2015: The Geopolitics of Energy

The upcoming issue will explore the problems and solutions that energy strategies add to the geopolitical and environmental problems we face today.

The committee welcomes papers on any energy-related topic. Possible topics may include:

  • The link between oil prices and regime change
  • ISIS and oil theft
  • Shale gas revolution’s effect on US and major exporters to US
  • Latin America’s leap to renewable energy
  • Energy and climate treaties
  • Exploring the Arctic

Submission Guidelines:
  • Essays cannot have been previously published, but need not be written specifically for the contest. Papers submitted for academic credit are welcome, provided they are relevant to the upcoming issue’s theme.
  • Papers should not exceed 4,000 words.
  • Citations should be in the form of footnotes formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style 16th Edition.
  • The Cordier contest is open to all Columbia University students, both graduate and undergraduate.

The P.E. lottery opens at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, September 8, and closes at 12:00 noon on Friday, September 11. 

To review the instructions for enrolling in a P.E. course, click here to review the instructions posted last week during Orientation.

At 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, the results of the lottery will be posted in the same area of myBarnard, in the form of rosters for the various P.E. classes. Search for your name to find your placement in a class.  Don't forget: the lottery gives you permission to add the class; it does not add it for you -- you will still need to add the class on myBarnard using the call number, just like all your other classes.

Important Reminder:  you will need to attend the first day of your PE class to claim your spot.  If your observance of a religious holiday makes this impossible, please email your instructor before class.

Any questions about your placement by the lottery should be directed to the P.E. department (200 Barnard Annex).

Note: Depending on your particular selections in the lottery and the demand for particular classes this year, there is a chance that the lottery will not place you in a class. If that happens, you may still pursue enrollment in a P.E. class by (a) visiting the P.E. department on Monday, September 14, to find out which classes still have space available and/or (b) visiting the first meeting of a class on Monday or Tuesday to see if space is or becomes available.  If neither of these works, you should plan to enter the P.E. lottery for spring 2016.

Remember that you will need to add the P.E. class to your List of Courses before your adviser submits her/his final approval on your fall program. The Governing Board at Barnard (GBB) is dedicated to representing, advocating for, and recognizing clubs at Barnard College. GBB aims to support clubs' efforts to promote student activity and learning outside of the classroom that enrich the Barnard community. We collaborate with other members of the Student Leadership Collective (SGA and McAC), the Barnard administration, and other governing boards of Columbia University to maximize campus opportunities and events for the greater student body. 

If you're interested in getting more involved, the board currently has two open General Representative positions. As members of the newest and smallest governing board on campus, you would have the unique opportunity to work closely with student leaders and administrators on campus and take part in influential decisions that works towards providing the best resources for all clubs. Important reminder:  Unlike PE classes, Dance Technique classes begin the first week of classes.




If you indicated during the summer your plan to enroll in a Dance technique course, we have notified the Dance department of your interest in the particular class that you chose. While this notification will not necessarily guarantee you a place in the class, you may be given priority over students who did not indicate interest in advance.  Note:  Even if you indicated your interest in a particular Dance technique class over the summer, you are not yet officially enrolled in the course; you must follow the instructions below to secure a place and to enroll in the course. If, on your summer program form, you did not indicate a plan to enroll in a Dance course but would now like to do so, you may try to enroll in one by following the instructions below.




In order to enroll in a Dance technique course, you must do the following:

  • Attend the first two class meetings. You can find the schedule for all Dance technique courses here in the Dance department’s section of online Directory of Courses. During the first class, the instructor may hold brief placement auditions to determine whether you are at the right level for the class.
  • After your placement has been confirmed,  add the 5-digit call number for the course to your myBarnard program. The Dance course must be listed as part of your final program on myBarnard as approved by your adviser, or you will not receive credit for the course. If you add the Dance course after your adviser has approved your program, you must ask your adviser to re-approve your program.
  • Satisfactory completion of a Dance technique class this semester will fulfill the one-semester Physical Education requirement and will earn you one point of degree credit. Barnard requires every student to complete at least one semester of Physical Education or Dance technique by the end of her first year.
If you indicated that you plan to take a Dance technique course, but you would like to take a fall-semester Physical Education class instead (or in addition to a Dance class), space permitting, you may do so either by signing up for the online lottery on myBarnard (see instructions on this FY Blog) or by attending the first meeting of the P.E. course.



Note: The credit for a Dance technique class will not appear on your myBarnard program until after the program filing deadline has passed (i.e., the week of September 18).

The Dance course must be listed as part of your final program on myBarnard as approved by your adviser, or you will not receive credit for the course.   • Satisfactory completion of a Dance technique class this semester will fulfill the one-semester Physical Education requirement and will earn you one point of degree credit. Barnard requires every student to complete at least one semester of Physical Education or Dance technique by the end of her first year.
If you indicated that you plan to take a Dance technique course, but you would like to take a fall-semester Physical Education class instead (or in addition to a Dance class), space permitting, you may do so either by signing up for the online lottery on myBarnard (see instructions on this FY Blog) or by attending the first meeting of the P.E. course.



Note: The credit for a Dance technique class will not appear on your myBarnard program until after the program filing deadline has passed (i.e., the week of September 18).

Important reminder:  Unlike PE classes, Dance Technique classes begin the first week of classes.




If you indicated during the summer your plan to enroll in a Dance technique course, we have notified the Dance department of your interest in the particular class that you chose. While this notification will not necessarily guarantee you a place in the class, you may be given priority over students who did not indicate interest in advance.  Note:  Even if you indicated your interest in a particular Dance technique class over the summer, you are not yet officially enrolled in the course; you must follow the instructions below to secure a place and to enroll in the course. FREE individual/small-group tutoring is available -- by and for Barnard students.

The mission of the Peer-to-Peer Tutoring program is to provide students with the support they need to succeed in numerous academic disciplines throughout their college career. The philosophy of our program is to ensure that students are receiving direct academic coaching and are learning to become independent learners. Through one-on-one and small-group tutoring, it is our hope that students will develop and enhance strategic study skills, and work closely with peers to become stronger students. We are asking all students who are matched with a peer tutor to share the responsibility of the tutoring process, and make a commitment to independent learning.

Tutoring is 2 hours per week, in groups of 1-3 students. We primarily support math, science, computer science, economics, and foreign language students, but other subjects may also be available on a case by case basis.

Feeling that office hours, TA sections, and Help Rooms aren't enough?  You may want to request a free peer tutor -- a fellow Barnard student who will work with you and one or two other students weekly to support your learning in a particular class. 
To request a tutor, make an appointment to discuss your learning needs with either Elida Martinez-Gaynor, Associate Director of Collegiate Programs, or with Rebecca Grabiner, First-Year Class Dean and Dean for Academic Assistance, using one of the following links:
